Auto mirrors next frontier for liquid crystal biz

Bahman Taheri’s Kent, Ohio-based company, AlphaMicron Inc., uses liquid crystal display technology to develop sunglass and goggle lenses that automatically dim in bright light. Last month, the company received a $1 million grant from the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation to develop auto-dimming rearview and side mirrors. AlphaMicron shares the grant with Elbit Systems Ltd., an Israeli avionics company that will market the mirrors and develop the electronics for them. Together, the companies are trying to take advantage of a potentially large opportunity created because automakers want an inexpensive auto-dimming mirror to include in lower-priced cars.
