Patterned Field-Induced Polymer Wall Formation in Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays


We used patterned electric fields to produce polymer walls in twisted nematic (TN) and electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) displays. Application of a patterned field to a mixture of liquid crystal (LC) and monomer results in segregation of liquid crystal into the high field (pixel) regions and monomer into the low field (inter-pixel) regions. Subsequent UV polymerization produces polymer walls surrounding the pixels. With proper selection of materials, uniform alignment of the liquid crystal can be obtained, resulting in good electro-optic performance.
