Z-scan measurement of the nonlinear refractive indices of micellar lyotropic liquid crystals with and without the ferrofluid doping

Abstract:

The laser-induced nonlinear optical response of micellar lyotropic liquid crystals in the nematic and isotropic phases is presented. The Z-scan technique is used to measure the amplitude and the sign of the nonlinear refractive indices of the lyotropic mixture. The amplitude of the nonlinear refractive indices is two orders of magnitude smaller than the one observed in thermotropic liquid crystals. The effect of the ferrofluid doping is also discussed.
